Make-Your-Own Camp Descriptions (Rising 1st -3rd)

"Make-Your-Own" Camp - Half-Day Choices
The "Make-Your-Own" camps are available for rising 1st - 3rd graders. The schedule allows campers to create their own summer experience by choosing combinations of one AM and one PM camp per week. Lunch is served with the AM group and transitions to the PM camp happen, right after lunch. 

Each week, we have a variety of activities, including soccer, hockey, cooking, art, parkour, dance, robotics, fencing, drones, creative writing, musical theater, pottery, STEAM programs, and chess. Offerings vary week to week, so check out the tabs below to see what's available.  

Please note: we will not be offering Make Your Owns for Week 3 (June 29 - July 2, 2020).

AM choice: 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., lunch served at 11:30 a.m.

SWIMMING: 
For “Make-Your-Own" Camp, swimming is available only through the “Splash & Play” swim option. None of the other "Make-Your-Owns" have swim as part of their programming.

  • American Parkour Academy - AM/PM Weeks 6 and 7

    Does your living room double as the set of Ninja Warrior? Is recess your child’s favorite subject? 

    Every child loves to run, jump and climb! Your child will learn to navigate obstacles and land safely, assessing their situation and using good judgement. These fun parkour classes also focus on creativity and use games to reinforce the skills and concepts learned in every session. Kids improve their focus and self confidence while learning a love for movement. 

    What’s needed: Comfy clothes and running shoes with rubber (not foam) soles. No prior experience necessary. 

    Offered by American Parkour Academy. With over 12 years of experience, the world’s first parkour training center opened right here in our nation’s capital. We have trained thousands of children through our programs in over 30 DC public schools, at our own Academy on New York Ave, and at after-school programs in many public and private schools.   
  • Chess by Silver Knights - PM Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 5

    In Chess Camp, campers play and learn about chess with Silver Knights! We've taught tens of thousands of children including national champions, but most students are beginners looking to learn and have fun! Campers are broken up in groups by skill level.  Activities include learning the rules, openings, tactics, endgames, studying master games, and playing lots of games against other students. On the last day, all students receive a T-shirt and chess set.
  • Creative Writing with Amore Learning - AM Weeks 4 and 5

    Creative Writing 

    Whether
     your child is already an avid writer or you hope they will become one, Amore Learning promises a fun, imaginative, and confidence-building time in Creative Writing!

    Designed to reach students of all enthusiasm and skill levels, this program will allow each writer to create a portfolio of cherished pieces. As we enjoy offering the class to a broad range of ages, students will each approach the activities in unique ways and the curriculum is differentiated by age. We also find that older students enjoy the opportunity to serve as role models for younger ones, and younger ones look up to older ones for inspiration!

    Friendships grow, the community is enriched, and everyone benefits as a result.
     Our focus is on having fun while boosting writing skills in a warm, nurturing, and exciting environment, all for the love of learning! 
  • EverWonder Adventures in Art - AM/PM Weeks 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7

    EverWonder is thrilled to be back at Beauvoir for our fifth summer! Creativity, curiosity, interesting materials and a nurturing environment are at the heart of our art adventure programs at Beauvoir.  We can't wait to welcome campers back into the art studio to imagine, innovate and create.  Let your imagination soar this summer!

    AM Outta this World Art!
    3, 2, 1.... BLAST OFF!
    Strap on your spacesuits, cosmonauts, and catch a ride with us on a whirlwind excursion to the ends of the known universe! We’ll create several celestial-themed projects in paint, collage, and even a 3D mixed media mobile. It's a mission for FUN!

    Week 2: June 22 - 26
    AM Incredible, Edible Art
    Do you have the skills to make edible creations like graham cracker mosaics and edible sculpture dough? Have you ever created (and eaten) an edible campfire? You are the key ingredient in our perfect recipe for summer fun! Campers will have a lip-smacking good time at our camp that is literally food for their brains!
     
    Week 4: July 6 - 10
    AM or PM Kids on Canvas
    Open your mind and let your imagination soar as we explore some of the greatest artists of all time. In this camp, campers will gleefully create, design, built and paint with real artist materials. We will study Picasso, Monet, Kandinsky, Matisse, Ringgold, Calder and more!

    Week 5: July 13 - 17
    AM or PM Wildcrafts: Art in Nature
    Campers will explore ways to make art with nature during this hands-on week of camp. Through painting, sculpting and weaving- all with natural materials- children will learn how to see nature in a new way. Campers will learn more about color, shape, texture and pattern as we discover all the wonderful natural areas around Beauvoir and the Cathedral Close.

    Week 6: July 20 - 24
    AM Slime Time!
    Stretchy, gooey, sticky, crunchy, colorful, irresistible SLIME! Join us for the messiest week of camp yet where you'll follow recipes and add your own creative twists to the projects that are sure to provide hours of fun as you'll be taking home 10 different types of slime! No matter how you stretch it, this week promises to be a slime-tastic adventure!

    Week 7: July 27 - 31
    AM The EverWonder School of Wizardry
    Calling all Harry Potter fans! Join us for this magical week of camp where we'll spend our days casting spells, making potions, drinking dancing unicorn milk and and learning magic tricks. We'll also travel by flying cars, create secret messages and make cloaks, wands, hats and more. This, you don't want to miss!!
  • Excite Soccer - AM Weeks 1 and 2

    AM - $295 per week

    Children will be encouraged to develop their mental, physical, and social abilities through creative soccer games and other activities taught by highly experienced staff; all trained working with young children. Participants will learn individual skills, teamwork, and most importantly, have fun! Our emphasis is on mastering basic coordination and agility with and without a soccer ball, as well as on providing a confidence-building environment. Each day of camp will finish with small sided scrimmages (Ie; 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 & 4v4)
    The soccer camp also provides a little variety to each child's camp experience. We wanted to Incorporate other sporting activities/games into each session to give campers a variety of sporting activities to guarantee each child a fantastic, high energy and fulfilling week of camp with Coach Scott!
     
    Children will focus on mastering their touch on the ball. This kind of touch quality means there is no sports skill involving a ball that a player can not learn. Training methods and activities will be centered with the young athlete in mind.

    Excite Soccer - have prided themselves on consistent staff. We are delighted to once again announce that these Camps will be lead and Instructed by Coach Scott Currie. Scott has worked camps/clinics with Beauvoir for several years and we are delighted that Scott will be once again back with us In 2020.
     
  • Hip-Hop Hooray by Ballet Petite - PM Weeks 1, 2, and 7

    PM - $275 per week

    Hip Hop Hooray
    Get breaking, locking, and popping with our afternoon dance classes, including Hip Hop Tap, Jazz, Street Dance, Urban Dance and Commercial New Style. Very fun activities are held daily, including Costume Design, Glow Dance Party with Freestyle Dance training, and Video Dance Games and contests.

    The highlight of every camp week is the Showcase! Hip Hop campers perform their group’s Hip Hop choreography, wearing the costumes they designed themselves for an audience of family and friends. Awards and Celebration follow, capping off the exciting camp week.

    Week 1: June 15 - 19: Rock Star
    Ever dreamed of being a Rock Star? Well now’s your chance! Students will create their own Rock Star personality through hip hop and rap while performing their favorite tracks from hit music! Get noticed and become the next sensation and share it with friends and family at the end of a rockin week! 

    Week 2: June 22 - 26: Trolls
    Get happy and dance to the music of the Trolls movie soundtrack, including hits like Justin Timberlake's "Can’t Stop the Feeling." Have a magical time learning amazing new dance moves and creating colorful Trolls props and sets. This camp will have kids dance, dance, dancin' hip hop fun in a final showcase! 

    Week 7: July 27 - 31: Space Jam
    Campers will climb into their own rocket ships and explore epic encounters in the universe. Using our lightsabers and the force, your child will have a blast developing their hip hop talents and extra-ordinary super skills as they travel through the galaxy. And an end of the week super-stellar showcase!
  • Hockey Camp with ActivePlay - PM Weeks 1 and 2

    Pass, shoot, and score this Summer! Students will learn hockey skills as they compete against each other in various games and drills. This class is a fun, high-energy, and high-endurance activity that will require many water breaks. Sign up to see if your child has what it takes to be a Stanley Cup Champion this summer at Beauvoir.

    This summer your child can begin learning a new language or continue to strengthen their foreign language skills. We will have two sessions of Spanish and one of French. Children will learn about different and interesting topics on countries that speak the language they are studying. Our instructors are native speakers, most of which are part of the Beauvoir Language Programs during the school year. See more information on the Summer Language page.
  • LEGO® Robotics Camp with Silver Knights - AM/PM Weeks 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7

    In Robotics camp we build, code, and have fun with LEGO® WeDo 2.0, a hands-on activity that combines LEGO® bricks, kid-friendly software, and engaging projects which inspire kids to explore the world of robotics! Students use gears, pulleys, and axles to create robots that move, crank, spin, and communicate.  At the end of the camp, each child takes home a T-shirt.

    AM African Safari: Explore the animal kingdom in this WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics Camp where you will build and code swinging monkeys, fierce Silverback gorillas, and other robots that climb, move, bite and roll!

    AM SpaceBots Space Exploration: Explore space and other planets in this fun WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics camp. You’ll build a Mars Rover, robotic arm and more bots that help you explore and examine our universe! 

    Week 4: July 6 - 10
    AM Bot vs. Bot Sports: Shoot and score in this fun WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics camp where you’ll make soccer kickers and goalies, basketball bots and more! Get your game face on!

    PM Australian Outback:
    We’ll go down under in this WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics Camp where you will build and code cute koalas, frilled lizards, venomous vipers and more robots that climb, move, bite and roll!

    AM Extreme Machines Mega-Machines: Explore the world of mega-machines in this WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics camp. Build and program robots that get the job done! Build real-world engineering marvels in this fun camp!

    PM SpaceBots Star Wars:
    These are the droids you're looking for! Explore the world of Star Wars in this fun WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics camp where you’ll build droids, space fighters and Jedi fighter robots. 

    Week 6: July 20 – 24
    AM Bot vs. Bot Robot Challenge: Take the WeDo 2.0 LEGO robot challenge in this fun camp. You’ll build and program Sumo wrestling bots, BattleTops and more bots that will compete in demonstrations of power and speed.

    AM Extreme Machines Contraptions: Explore the world of crazy contraptions in this WeDo 2.0 LEGO Robotics camp. Build and program over-the top cars, catapults and ballistas and more bots in this fun camp!
  • Math Camp - AM Weeks 1 - 2

    Math Camp 
    Two Week AM Half-Day Choice (June 15 - 26) $650

    This two week math program is designed to help your summer student not only retain what they have learned when it comes to math but progress with their mathematical thinking, understanding and problem-solving with a carefully crafted curriculum. This focused and structured camp will help combat the “summer slip” that some students experience when school is out of session. This summer session is designed for rising 1st - 3rd graders.
  • Musical Theater by Ballet Petite - PM Weeks 4 and 5

    PM - $275 per week

    Let your inner star shine! Sing and belt out amazing songs and develop your vocal technique. Enjoy the energy and fun of what it takes to become a Broadway bound performer with choreography and jazz dance. Then be a triple threat performer with learning to be an unparalleled actor! Define a character and bring characterization to the amazing Broadway songs. Very fun activities are held daily, exploring all aspects of a Musical Theater production including designing costumes, creating props, painting sets, and having a cast party with musical theater contests. The exciting culmination of the camp week is the Showcase! Our Broadway stars will perform their musical, wearing the costumes they designed themselves for an audience of family and friends. Awards and celebration follow, capping off the exciting camp week.

    Moana
    “Does the sea call to you?! Come with us as we discover the South Pacific and create our own mythic adventure complete with goddesses, demigods, and lava demons! Moana is about knowing who you are, and how far you’ll go to fulfill that destiny. The story is a wonderful starting off point for campers to begin thinking about the characters and stories they’d like to create for themselves! We’ll play drama and dance games, create set and prop pieces, and of course, dance, sing, and act out our own musical showcase!


    Week 5: July 13 - 17
    Cats
    Cats is the longest-running broadway musical and new movie sensation, join us for this thrilling week! This camp is simply purrfect for creative, curious campers ready to scamper onto the stage as the Jellicle Cats. Cats tells the story of a fantasy night when an extraordinary tribe of cats gathers for its annual ball to rejoice and decide which cat will be reborn. Campers will explore storytelling and poetry, singing, dancing, and puppetry. Experience this popular musical and join us for the Jellicle Cats Annual Ball showcase on the last day!
  • Olympic Fencing - AM/PM Weeks 4 and 5

    En Garde! Calling all pirates, musketeers, jedi – Olympic Fencing is coming to Beauvoir Summer!
     
    This camp will introduce your children to this history-rich sport in a safe and game-based environment. It's an unique opportunity for families looking for a fun activity that combines athleticism and intellect. Fencing emphasizes balance, coordination, and effective decision-making. Like other martial arts, the sport is about personal accomplishment, creative problem-solving, and self-discipline. Fencers apply their acquired skills and confidence to other sports, studies, and life. 
     
    All equipment is provided. Students must wear athletic shoes and comfortable clothing.

    Offered through Nazlymov Fencing Foundation, a new non-profit with the mission to enrich physical, academic, and character development of children through the new it-sport of fencing. The foundation was created upon the retirement and relocation to our area of Vladimir Nazlymov, 3-time Olympic Champion, Head Coach of Ohio State Varsity Fencing, 3 times National Champions.   • Pottery: Ceramics Around the World by Jimmy Potters - PM Weeks 1, 2, 6, and 7

    Pottery Camp: Ceramics Around the World

    Weeks 1, 2, 6, and 7

    Pottery camp at Jimmy Potters is a unique opportunity for children to work as actual artist in a professional ceramic studio environment. Each week, young students will learn a variety of ceramic techniques. Children will create cultural clay inspired projects using hand building methods as they unleash their imaginations to create wonderful works of art. Each camp will have inspirational theme projects from around the world. Projects will be different each week, taught by our accomplished instructor, giving the opportunity for children to be involved in multiple weeks of camp.
     
  • Scratch Coding with Silver Knights - PM Weeks 1, 2, 6, and 7

    PM - $275 per week

    In Silver Knights coding camp, children learn to create stories, games, and animations using a visual programming language called Scratch. It’s as easy to use as snapping together building blocks! With Scratch, children learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. Our curriculum teaches new coders the basics while challenging more experienced coders to create increasingly complex programs. Silver Knights provides a laptop for every child.  At the end of the camp, each child takes home a T-shirt and a USB with all their programs on it!

    Digital Animation: Art and Adventure!
    With Scratch, children learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Our curriculum teaches new coders the basics, while challenging experienced coders to create increasingly complex programs. Silver Knights provides a laptop for every child. The Digital Animation unit shows kids how to program their own adventure stories, quiz games, and visual art. What’s your story?

    Game Design: Arcade Action
    With Scratch, children learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically.  Our curriculum teaches new coders the basics, while challenging experienced coders to create increasingly complex programs. Silver Knights provides a laptop for every child. The Arcade Action unit shows kids how to program their own take on classic arcade games like Pong, Tanks, and Snake! Game on!

    ame Design: Mazes and Monsters
    With Scratch, children learn to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reason systematically. Our curriculum teaches new coders the basics, while challenging experienced coders to create increasingly complex programs. Silver Knights provides a laptop for every child. The Game Design: Mazes and Monsters unit shows kids how to program their own maze games, platformers, and side scrolling games. Level up!

    Campers will love speeding down a wet and soapy slip n’ slide, play sponge tag and other water games on the Beauvoir playground. In the week, they will work on some water based  experiments and projects. Campers will also get to tie dye a t-shirt as well. This option includes a longer 45 minute block of swim instruction at the Beauvoir Pool.
  • STEAM with Tunes 4 Tots - PM Weeks 2, 6, and 7

    Musical Marbles  
    Does your child love to build?? Sign them up for unlimited building fun using Legos, chain reaction sets, dominoes, brick mazes, and large scale marble runs! Legos will be used to gain an understanding of basic architecture and engineering, and who doesn't love having a contest to see who can build the highest tower?! Chain reaction sets and dominoes will implement critical thinking skills in figuring out "what comes next" - picture the fun your child would have creating an over sized domino train or a Rube Goldberg machine! Brick mazes will encourage students to get even more creative with their building, and the marble runs will bring it all together! The final challenge will integrate arts education by teaching students to match their self-constructed marble runs to the tempo of songs that they love!
     
    Week 6: July 20 – 24
    Musical Rainstorm 
    Does your child love water play?? This class will turn splash time into learning! Sign your child up for an awesome summer experience where they will get to splash around while experimenting with sound effects. Working at water tables, students will collaborate to create a structure that makes music using water as the catalyst. For example, a maze made up of bells that ring when water pours down it. Or a "wind chime" that doesn't use wind, but water instead! How about a drum at the end of a custom built water way that allows the water to drop at a steady rate?! The possibilities are endless! Students will have the opportunity to explore the science of sound and the art of engineering in this hands-on, project based course. 
     
    Week 7: July 27 - 31
    Music of Nature 
    Students will have the opportunity to get outside and explore nature with a fun, musical twist. During this STEAM project, students will go outside, explore what’s in nature, and learn to re-purpose found objects into amazing musical instruments! This class combines engineering, building, and learning about musical instruments with a love of the outdoors. Students will explore the different families of orchestral and world percussion instruments. Once they are done building a wide variety of instruments, students will spend time exploring how they create their own music together!
  • Tiny Chefs - AM Weeks 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7

    AM - $295 per week

    Tiny & Gourmet Chefs will work hands-on to cook delicious dishes, decorate chefs hats and place mats, and leave with printed copies of the recipes to recreate at home! Our cooking camps are a fun way for kids to flex their creative muscles, spend time working in peer groups, and best of all: a great way to introduce them to the joy of cooking and baking! 

    Campers will learn how to measure, mix, stir, and pour as they cook and bake tasty eats from scratch. Essential cooking skills will be explored from chopping to grilling and sautéing. Our instructors work with your Tiny or Gourmet Chefs to teach them skills that will stay with them for years to come, from organizational skills, learning to work as a team, cooperation and taking turns. 

    Sessions also touch on basic math skills and an effort is made to introduce new ingredients and flavors that may not be familiar to many campers. All campers receive an electronic cookbook containing the recipes they have made on the final day of each week so that they can share their new skills, experiences and taste sensations with everyone at home!
     
    AM Week 1: June 15 – 19
    Dips and Donuts 
    Does your kid love to dip their food? Chips in salsa, veggies in hummus, bread sticks in marinara sauce? How about dipping donuts in glazes and toppings? In this fun, nutritious and delicious camp, the Tiny Chefs will do all of that! Savory recipes like Mexican Layered Dip or Spinach and Artichoke Dip in Wonton Wrappers will be made side-by side with Lemon Glazed Blueberry Donuts and Pumpkin Donut Holes with Cinnamon Topping. These are just a few of the types of recipes your Tiny Chef will enjoy as they dip and dunk (and bake and blend) their way through our newest camp!
     
    AM Week 2: June 22 - 26 
    American Picnic
    American cuisine is inspired by cultures around the world but has become uniquely and deliciously its own! For most Americans, nothing says summer like Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and Potato Salad. And while some of those items are definitely on our All American Summer Menu, we are also going to explore American cuisine from sea to shining sea, from Southern BBQ to California’s twist on the BLT to the countrywide favorite Strawberry Shortcake! Come dive into summer with Tiny Chefs-- It will feel like the 4th of July all week!
     
    AM Week 4: July 6 – 10
    Restaurant Creation
    If your Tiny Chef dreams of someday having their own restaurant, sign them up for this inventive summer camp! Each day the students will produce a different course (appetizer, soup, main dish or dessert) or an item from a certain cuisine and build a restaurant around it. Over the course (no pun intended) of the session they will also be working on a final idea for their own restaurant, expanding on the types of foods their particular restaurant would serve based on the experiences they have had in class. Students will be introduced to a variety of cuisines, cooking skills and presentations throughout the week.

    AM Week 5: July 13 – 17
    Chopped! Junior
    Never have food challenge reality shows been so popular and Chopped! is a favorite here at Tiny Chefs! We like it so much we decided to base a whole week long camp on the concept. Our version has the added twist of focusing on different cuisines every day of camp. So, each day the Tiny Chef campers will be presented with 3 or 4 ingredients, which reflect these different cuisines—French, Italian, Mexican, Asian and “All-American”. Using those ingredients and working within those cuisines, they will challenge themselves to make mouthwatering specialties, traditional favorites and explore new ingredients, tastes and combinations.
     
    AM Week 6: July 20 – 24
    Cupcake Wars
    Cupcakes are all the rage and it’s a trend that’s clearly here to stay! If you’ve ever been curious about how the pros make those cupcakes so precious and ornate, and if competition is your middle name, then this is the week for you! We’ll spend three days on cupcake basics - measuring, mixing, baking, and frosting, and then finish the week with two days of baking battle! Small teams will face off with one another to compete for the title of “Best Cupcake!”. May the best cupcake win!

    Dips and Donuts
    Does your kid love to dip their food? Chips in salsa, veggies in hummus, bread sticks in marinara sauce? How about dipping donuts in glazes and toppings? In this fun, nutritious and delicious camp, the Tiny Chefs will do all of that! Savory recipes like Mexican Layered Dip or Spinach and Artichoke Dip in Wonton Wrappers will be made side-by side with Lemon Glazed Blueberry Donuts and Pumpkin Donut Holes with Cinnamon Topping. These are just a few of the types of recipes your Tiny Chef will enjoy as they dip and dunk (and bake and blend) their way through our newest camp!

Beauvoir Summer is located at Beauvoir, the National Cathedral Elementary School, on the 60-acre Cathedral Close in Washington, DC. Beauvoir is a coeducational Pre-Kindergarten through Third Grade school carefully designed for young learners.
